SOUTHDOWN WOOL HAS A HELICAL/SPIRAL CRIMP AND IS BEST USED AS NATURAL ELASTIC FOR BLENDING!
Most of y'all know my spite sheep Betty. I got her a long time ago when I was mad at my hubby for traveling too much for work. It wasn't really his fault, so I channeled my frustration into a sheep purchase. Unlike all those adorable shetlands running round this farm, Betty is BIG, probably 180lbs big. And she doesn't "Baaaa!" Betty says "WOOOONG!"
Betty is a southdown. Her fiber is fun, but it is not for spinning straight. Southdown's have helical/spiral crimp known for springiness, elasticity, and resilience. I think blending it in with another fine wool at 5-20% gives the perfect touch of natural elasticity. I processed her oatmeal color fiber as a single batch to give you the opportunity to add it to your blends.
The Little Farm: Our farm is the happy home of a small flock of scratch and dent, down on their luck, and ready for retirement angora and pygmy angora cross goats and Shetland sheep. They are adorable and silly and sweet. They serve the dual purpose of keeping our non arable land mowed and producing high quality, super fine, luxury mohair and wool for spinners, dyers, weaver, and other fiber artists.
